  1. 1571-1631. English antiquary. At his home in
  2. Westminster he built up a fine collection of
  3. manuscripts and coins, many of which had come
  4. from the despoiled monasteries. His son
  5. Thomas Cotton (1594- 1662) added to the
  6. library. The collection is now in the British
  7. Museum.
